You might have thought that some of the world’s biggest clubs should feature on this list. After all, it makes sense for elite clubs to have deep roots, going back in the 1800s. Such is not the case, though. Wrexham FC is a Welsh club. It should be noted that Wrexham FC are the oldest club in Wales and among the world’s oldest professional football teams. The club was formed back in 1864, and they are dubbed ‘The Dragons’ alongside other nicknames.

9. Royal Engineers Association FC, 1863

Football teams in this list come in all shades. Royal Engineers FC is among the oldest football clubs in the world. Although the club is not what you’d call professional, the Sappers (as they are usually called) take pride in their team. The club was formed in 1863, courtesy of Major Francis Marindin. Royal Engineers Association FC prefers a combination game rather than aiming to attack at full force. The Sappers were highly competitive during the 1870s.

8. Civil Service FC, 1863

On October 26, 1863, the Football Association came into being. Civil Service FC was among the 11 clubs that formed the FA. The London-based club was founded on the same year. Civil Service FC played both association football and rugby, switching to football later on. The club competes in the Southern Amateur League and in October 2013 the club played to honor the FA 150th anniversary, in Buckingham Palace

7. Stoke City FC, 1863

The Stoke-on-Trent basedclub is the oldest club in the Premier League. Stoke City was founded in 1863 when some pupils of Charterhouse School came together to form a football club. The team was originally called Stoke Ramblers, and the club its name to Stoke City FC only in 1928. The Potters are the only Premier League club to feature in our list. Their home ground is the Britannia Stadium, opened in August 1997.

6. Notts County, 1862

It may not be the oldest team to feature on this list, but Notts County is the oldest professional football club in the world. Founded in 1862, the Nottingham-based club has played more than 4,750 Football League matches between 1889 and 2014- like no other English team. Notts County plays in their traditional black and white striped shirts, the same shirts Juventus have worn for decades. Notts County home ground is the Meadow Lane.

5. Cray Wanderers FC, 1860

Most clubs in this list play in the lower tiers of the English football. Cray Wanderers FC is a semi-professional football club and they currently play in the Isthmian League Division One North. The Bromley-based club was founded back in 1860. The Wands(as they are usually called) are the oldest club in London. Their home ground is Hayes Lane with a capacity of just over 5,000 seats. They might be semi-professional, but that doesn’t really matter to the supports.

4. Hallam FC, 1860

Hallam FC is a modes football club: the Sheffield-based club plays in the Northern Counties East League One Division. The club was founded in 1860, thus earning a place among the top five oldest clubs in the world. Hallam FC have played at Sandygate Road ever since their formation. In fact, the Guinness Books of Records have officially recognized the Sandygate Road as the oldest football ground in the world. The Countrymen should be really proud.

3. Lima CFC, 1859

This might come as a surprise to most football fans, but Lima CFC is among the top three oldest football clubs in the world. To be more precise, Lima CFC is both a cricket and football club. The team is based in Lima, Peru’s capital city. The football team currently plays in the local league of San Isidro District. The club was allegedly founded by English migrants in 1859. It is a small and modest club, but history is history.

2. Cambridge University AFC, 1857

Most colleges in the US have their teams in sports such as basketball, baseball, etc. Cambridge University Association Football Club represents the University of Cambridge. The club was founded in 1857, although officials at the famed university claim that the club was founded the previous year, in 1856. Their home ground is the Grange Road Stadium, also known as Fenner’s Pitches. The ground has a capacity of just 1,000 seats.

1. Sheffield FC- 1857

Sheffield FC may be playing at level 8 in the northern Premier League Division One South, but their supporters take pride in one thing above all: Sheffield FC is recognized as the oldest football club in the world, hence their place in the first spot in our list. The club was founded on October 24, 1857, by some members of the local cricket team. Their home ground is the Coach and Horses Ground, with a capacity of 2,089 spectators.
